My family and myself have lived in Singapore for two years. During this time we have always skipped visiting the Universal Studios Singapore theme park located within the Resorts World Integrated Resort in Sentosa island.
But our time to leave Singapore has arrived. Well that is about 6 months ago. And so upon learning that we are to heading back to the Philippines, we decided that it was time for us to visit Universal Studios Singapore. We bought our tickets from a travel agency in Chinatown which is way cheaper than buying online or in their ticket booths.
Well actually it is also very timely as my aunt and 3 cousins where flying over to Singapore for a vacation during that time.
To get to the Universal Studios Singapore, we had to take the MRT leading to the HarbourFront MRT station at the south of the island. From there, we walked straight into the VivoCity Mall to its top floor to ride the Sentosa Express Monorail that goes into Sentosa Island. Then we alighted at the Waterfront Station which is the first station from Vivocity and is the station dedicated for Resorts World Sentosa.
By the entrance of the theme park stands their interpretation of the Universal Studios globe. It is a lot bigger than the Universal Studios Hollywood‘s globe. Here guests try to find their spots to get a good picture.
The main entrance of the park is located right under the tracks of the Sentosa Express and it leads to the park’s version of the CityWalk, the Hollywood. Basically this section replicates the famous Los Angeles boulevard where the Walk of Fame is located.
In this area, we had the opportunity to get a picture with the sexy cartoon character, Ms. Betty Boop. She was famous with her big head, sexy body and her red dress. Also another lovable cartoon character was in that area. The funny and fluffy black and white and the high-kicking panda, the Kung Fu Panda.
Going in further into the park, we headed next to Madagascar. Not the country but to part of the park following the theme of the movie Madagascar made famous by a lion, a giraffe, a hippo, a zebra, and four penguins.
The main attraction there is that big ship from the movie where the Madagascar: A Crate Adventure ride is located. The ride is basically a boat ride that snakes inside the ship while we follow the adventure of the main characters of the film.
We took our lunch in the restaurant just beside the big ship and here we had the opportunity to take pictures with the Penguins of Madagascar and King Julien XIII the lemur. Also at another show, my daughter had the opportunity to have a photo with Gloria the Hippopotamus
The next section of the park is called Far Far Away, the kingdom featured in the animated film, Shrek where Princess Fiona lives. But by the entrance of Far Far Away stands the tree house of Shrek. Inside the castle, they featured the Shrek 4-D Adventure, a 4D film which I’ve already seen in the Universal Studios Hollywood. The 4D film follows a short story where Princess Fiona was kidnapped by the ghost of Lord Farquaad.
It was a good show specially for my youngest daughter who experiences her very first 3D movie. Upon exit from the 4D cinema, is a gift shop and a mini wooden Ferris wheel. Well my daughters wanted to ride it and I had to get on the ride with them.
Later, we had an opportunity to catch Pinnochio from the Shrek movie and have a picture with him just outside the castle. Also had a chance to see the Fairy Godmother along with Prince Charming form the Shrek movie but they were both rushing and we didn’t have the chance to take photos with them.
The next section is the Lost World based from the blockbuster movie, Jurassic Park. This features the Rapids Adventure which is similar to the Hollywood’s Jurassic Ride but here their raft is smaller and circular that goes through a bumpy rides into the rapids, just like the Rio Grande Ride in Enchanted Kingdom, in Laguna. The ride also has a waterfall in the end of the ride that happens in the dark but except that here the drop was not as high. My wife and three cousins tried this out and they found it very fun.
Also in this section they of the park, they had this ride called Dino-Soarin’ which basically is like the airplane ride that goes round and round. My eldest daughter really wanted to take a ride on this so I once more went with her. Another interesting ride they have here is the Canopy Flyer which is like a roller coaster ride but just a seat for four hanging from the rails as it go around the area.
Also in this section is another famous attraction that the park brought in from Hollywood and this is the water and fire show of the Waterworld, again based from the 1995 movie of the same name where Kevin Costner stars in. The movie was a post-apocalyptic film where the all land has gone under water.
Well, prior the show, some of the cast would play with the guests who sits in the soak seats splashing water on them or even pour buckets on their heads. Overall, it was a good show, though they had some technical problems. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as exciting as the show in Hollywood but still it was a great show.
Then the next section is Ancient Egypt where it’s main attraction is Revenge of the Mummy ride based on the movie The Mummy. The ride is the same ride from the Hollywood park which is an indoor roller coaster ride. While around this section of the park they sported architecture that depicts, well Ancient Egypt complete with the pyramid, the Egyptian gods, and even an Egyptian guard.
Another section is one of the most famous area in the park is Sci-fi City. This is in the theme of another blockbuster film, Transformers, based on the original cartoons of robots that transforms into vehicles. It is also the site of their most famous ride, Transformers The Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle. Before guests take the ride, guests walk through this long path and then they ride cars that moves in tune of the 3D film which makes visitors feel their in the middle of a battle scene between the Transformers. Well this ride basically is like the Simpsons Ride in the Hollywood park but this is far better.
Also in the Sci-fi City section of the park stands Universal Studios Singapore’s most famous attraction, the Battlestar Galactica, a double roller coaster called the Human and Cylon. But unfortunately it was always not in operation due to mechanical problems. It was almost always in maintenance that I saw a news that they are finally replacing that attraction.
The next and final section of the park is called New York. One famous attraction here is the appearance the famous characters from the children show, the Sesame Street. At certain times of the day, the gang from Sesame Street performs for the kids and allow guests to have their photos with them. That they we had Big Bird, Ernie and Bert, Elmo, Grover, the Grouch, and the Cookie Monster. It simply brings back memories of my childhood.
It was a good time in Universal Studios Singapore, even though they built in a small plot of land in Sentosa island, it was still packed with fun for the family.
